The Northern Territory Department of Lands and Planning has the responsibility for developing and providing the strategic planning and growth frameworks, strategies and infrastructure plans required to sustainably develop the Territory. Important areas of focus will include comprehensive analysis of growth trends to inform government decision making, a strategic land use plan for the greater Darwin region, Territory wide residential and industrial land release programs, planning for the City of Weddell and a new regional transport framework.

The department provides an integrated approach to service delivery through the Northern Territory Lands Group and the Northern Territory Transport Group

In addition, a one stop shop for building industry regulation will be created by the joining of the NT Build Office to the Builders Licencing, Plumbers and Drainers Licencing and Electrical Workers and Contractors Licencing functions.

arrowNew transit centre opens at Humpty Doo

A new $900,000 park and ride bus interchange has opened at Humpty Doo. The new park and ride facility will offer 12 bus travel options per weekday, as well as six on Saturday. Rural area residents will pay $4 for a standard return trip to the Darwin and Palmerston CBD, enjoy free bus services to big events such as the Darwin Show and have the option to leave their car at the secure site. arrowNew $17 million bridge for Darwin now open

A new $17 million rail overpass fully opened to traffic for the first time today, allowing uninterrupted access to the growing East Arm industrial hub.

Chief Minister Paul Henderson and Senator Trish Crossin, representing Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Anthony Albanese, officially opened the new four lane, two way traffic bridge which will redirect up to 4000 heavy vehicles a day. Media Release

 

arrowNew ferry service a win for locals

Cox Peninsula locals will benefit from a new ferry service between Mandorah and Cullen Bay from 1 January 2012.

Minister for Transport Gerry McCarthy said a licence agreement reached with Fast Ferries Pty Ltd delivers free travel at all times for school students and seniors who live on the Cox Peninsula.

"The Department of Lands and Planning has signed a two-year licence with Fast Ferries to support the Mandorah to Cullen Bay ferry service with new conditions that benefit the most regular users," Mr McCarthy said. Read the Media Release

December project update - Maintenance works to the sea wall continues.
To ensure the ongoing working life of the lock, maintenance works continue on the sea wall. The works are being planned to have minimal impact on residents, businesses, commuters and the public. Some parking remains unavailable and for safety reasons, so is unleaded fuel. Construction is underway on a major upgrade to Jenkins Road to provide better access to the new city of Weddell and future oil and gas developments at Middle Arm. Construction has started on a $1.3 million project for new traffic lights at the intersection of Stuart Highway and Jenkins Road. This is on top of two-staged $14 million project already underway to seal fourteen kilometres of Jenkins Road from Stuart Highwayto Finn Road, and Finn Road to Channel Island Road, jointly funded by the Territory Government and the Ichthys LNG Project. Thousands of trees will be planted along Top End suburban streets as part of a $1 million Northern Territory Government’s Greening our Streets program beginning this month. Twenty Darwin and Palmerston suburban streets will receive landscape and tree planting as part of the million dollar community investment. Greening Australia representatives will visit winning streets during December to discuss the program’s implementation with residents. In these face-to-face meetings, more detail will be provided about the tree species planned for each area, the schedule of community planting days and residents’ responsibilities regarding maintenance. All Territorians are being urged to stay safe on our roads over the festive season by planning ahead All Territorians are being urged to stay safe on our roads over the festive season by planning ahead and organising a sober driver.  Party goers are reminded that there are many sober bob’s to call upon to get you home safely, it can be a bus driver, taxi driver or a friend or relative coming from home. Free soft drinks at participating venues.

Those party goers that are heading out in the city can catch the Christmas Express shuttle bus from a new secure pick up point. The Express will run from 26 November and every Saturday and Sunday night up until Christmas day. Fares are set at $5 Darwin City, $10 northern suburbs and $15 Palmerston, and will drop you to your door step. The new secure pick up point is located on Mitchell street at the bus stop opposite Kitty O’Sheas.

The Department of Lands and Planning business units located at Cavenagh House will be moving to Arnhemica House in Parap in early 2012. Business units included in this move are Building Advisory Services, Development Assessment Services, Land Administration and Strategic Lands and Planning. arrowNT Police vehicles to carry specialised road safety numberplates
Police Traffic vehicles across the Northern Territory will now display specialised number plates carrying road safety messages, Minister for Transport, Gerry McCarthy announced on Thursday 6 October 2011.

30 number plates will be fitted to police traffic vehicles and some emergency vehicles across  Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs to spread the word about road safety. Media Release

Minister for Transport, Gerry McCarthy said the new environmentally friendly facility is a Territory first and will provide commuters with the option of leaving the car or bike behind and taking advantage of public transport into Palmerston and Darwin CBD from the rural area.

Construction is underway on a new $17 million Berrimah Road Railway Overpass that will benefit more than 4000 vehicles a day.

"The $17 million new Berrimah Bridge is part of my Government's plan to keep the Territory heading in the right direction," Chief Minister Paul Henderson said.

A joint industry and Government report will improve road safety by ensuring we safely share our roads with heavy vehicles.

The Darwin Region Heavy Vehicle Taskforce Report contains 29 recommendations. Government will move to deliver on a number of the report’s recommendations in the short term while carefully considering all 29 recommendations in the report.
